Longtime Wheel of Fortune announcer Jim Thornton has been suspended from the game show by producer Sony Pictures Television. The suspension comes as the studio launches an investigation into unspecified allegations stemming from an alleged in-flight disturbance.
Sony Pictures Television confirmed the decision in a statement, noting that the iconic voice role will be temporarily recast while internal reviews take place.
Studio Statement: “We have recently been made aware of allegations concerning Jim Thornton,” a Sony Pictures TV spokesperson stated. “He has been suspended from Wheel of Fortune and we are recasting while we conduct a thorough investigation.”
The Alleged Incident: Reports indicate the suspension follows a May 2026 incident aboard an American Airlines flight to Los Angeles. A passenger reportedly raised concerns with a flight attendant, leading the pilot to request law enforcement meet Thornton at the gate.
Police Response: Police met the plane upon arrival at LAX and questioned Thornton—who was wearing a show-branded “Wheel of Fame” jacket—before releasing him without immediate charges.
Thornton joined Wheel of Fortune as a guest announcer in 2010 following the death of original announcer Charlie O’Donnell, officially securing the permanent role in 2011. Having voiced over 2,000 episodes and worked alongside former host Pat Sajak and current host Ryan Seacrest, Thornton’s sudden suspension leaves a prominent vacancy as production continues for the upcoming season.
