One of the most remarkable, boundary-breaking journeys in modern music history is officially getting the premium Hollywood treatment. Sony Pictures has confirmed that a major biographical film chronicling the extraordinary life and career of five-time Grammy-winner and country-pop icon Shania Twain is officially in active development.

The highly anticipated project, simply titled Shania, marks a major addition to the studio’s cinematic slate. The global music community has erupted with excitement following the news, as the Canadian superstar stands as the best-selling female artist in country music history. The official announcement of the Shania Twain biopic movie development guarantees a sweeping, music-filled cinematic experience that will map her historic crossover from a small-town Nashville newcomer into an international stadium headliner.

To bring the complex, emotional layers of her life to screen, Sony has tapped a rapidly rising powerhouse filmmaker. Screenwriter, director, and former singer Leah McKendrick has been officially locked in to both pen the script and direct the feature film. McKendrick, who is currently gearing up for the highly anticipated June 2026 premiere of her Netflix romantic comedy Voicemails for Isabelle, reportedly secured the coveted gig because of her unique background in the pop songwriting world.

The country legend will not just be watching from the sidelines. The singer herself is actively attached to the film as an executive producer alongside Amie Karp, ensuring that the script maintains absolute creative authenticity to her real-world experiences.

• The Director & Writer: Leah McKendrick (Scrambled, I Know What You Did Last Summer)

• The Production Team: Shania Twain and Amie Karp

• The Studio: Sony Pictures / TriStar

While specific casting searches for the lead role are still tightly under wraps, the film’s narrative backbone is expected to lean heavily into her catalog of global anthems, including “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!,” “You’re Still the One,” and “That Don’t Impress Me Much.”

The upcoming film comes at a highly defining moment for the music star, who is simultaneously preparing to drop her highly anticipated seventh studio album, Little Miss Twain, on July 24, 2026. Unlike standard, formulaic musical biopics, her real-life journey features incredibly dramatic, high-stakes emotional chapters that are perfectly built for a three-act Hollywood structure.

The narrative is expected to follow her incredibly rough childhood growing up in extreme poverty in Timmins, Ontario, where she began singing in local bars at just eight years old to help her family pay basic utility bills. The emotional core of the film will undoubtedly center on the tragic 1987 car accident that killed her mother and stepfather, forcing her to temporarily put her musical dreams on hold to legally raise her younger siblings. From navigating her explosive, multi-platinum partnership and turbulent divorce with legendary rock producer Mutt Lange to her devastating battle with Lyme disease that temporarily stole her singing voice, the cinematic narrative will highlight the ultimate blueprint of human resilience.
