The Vampire Diaries fans will forever debate Elena Gilbert’s choice between Stefan and Damon, but off-screen, the drama between the show’s lead actors was very real. Years after the hit CW drama concluded, Paul Wesley has taken complete ownership of his former feud with co-star Nina Dobrev—while confirming that the two have long since put the past behind them to become close friends.

“I Was Probably the Problem”: Paul Wesley Speaks Out

Addressing the well-documented tension that existed during the early seasons of the show, Wesley admitted during a recent interview that his own mindset and approach to work at the time were the primary drivers of their friction.

“Looking back, I take full responsibility,” Wesley shared candidly. “I was probably very intense and stubborn. Nina was fantastic, and I was just overly focused on work and taking myself way too seriously. It created this dynamic where we clashed. It was 100% on me.”

Dobrev famously surprised fans in 2019 by admitting on a podcast that despite playing star-crossed lovers on screen, she and Wesley “despised each other” during the first few years of filming. Wesley’s recent admission offers fans a reflective, mature perspective on how grueling production schedules and young ambition impacted their personal dynamic.

Despite their rocky start, the former co-stars managed to build a deep, genuine friendship as the series progressed a bond that has outlasted the show itself. Today, Wesley and Dobrev regularly hang out, support each other’s projects, and frequently share double dates and holiday reunions on social media.

Overcoming Drama: The duo transitioned from cold interactions on set to leaning on each other as trusted confidants during the show’s eight-season run.

A Lasting Bond: Both actors have noted that out of the entire Vampire Diaries cast, they are now among the closest of friends.

Mutual Respect: Dobrev has previously echoed this sentiment, stating that facing initial friction often leads to the most honest, long-lasting friendships.
