In a determined push for answers regarding the death of her 18-year-old son, Christine Wells-Wonsley has initiated legal steps in court to gain control over Nolan Wells’ social media accounts and digital footprint.
The legal maneuver comes as part of her petition to be appointed as the administrator of her son’s estate in Jackson County, Mississippi. By securing formal legal authority over his estate and digital assets, Wonsley hopes to directly subpoena technology platforms and request account archives to preserve potential evidence.
The family’s effort to access Wells’ social media profiles stems from discrepancies uncovered shortly after his recovery on July 6, 2026:
Cleared Snapchat Data: During an initial news conference, Wonsley revealed that when the family recovered Nolan’s phone, his Snapchat account contained no saved photos, videos, or messages from July 4 the day he went missing on Horn Island.
Out of Character: The family emphasized that clearing messages was out of character for the teen, who routinely documented social gatherings and trips through photos and videos.
Potential Deletion: Wonsley and her legal team suspect that crucial messages and media files may have been deleted or altered during the hours following his disappearance.
“When we opened it up, there was nothing… there were no saved pictures, there were no snaps from that day,” Wonsley previously shared. “Anyone who’s ever been around Nolan will tell you, at social gatherings, he’s taking videos, he’s taking pictures. That’s why we feel that things may have been deleted.”
By establishing control of the estate, Wonsley and civil rights attorney Ben Crump will have the legal standing required to compel social media companies and service providers to produce deleted data, login history, and location metrics recorded prior to his death.
While state authorities and independent forensic experts continue to review toxicology and autopsy reports, Wells’ family maintains that recovering his digital footprint remains essential to understanding the timeline leading up to his tragic passing.
