A Mississippi grand jury has officially concluded its review into the tragic July 4 death of Nolan Wells, deciding unanimously to decline criminal charges against anyone involved. The 18-year-old Black teenager vanished from a large Fourth of July boat party, and his body was recovered from the water two days later in Horn Island.
According to the district attorney’s office, the 23-member grand jury reviewed a massive amount of evidence including witness testimony and independent investigative files provided by the victim’s family before reaching a final decision.
No Foul Play Found: The grand jury reported finding no evidence of foul play, nor any criminal or racial motivation behind the teenager’s passing.
Ruling of Accidental Drowning: The panel ultimately ruled that the manner of death was “consistent with drowning,” reaffirming the initial assessment made by local authorities in Horn Island.
Despite the jury’s findings, the case has faced intense scrutiny. Wells’ family and their legal representative, civil rights attorney Ben Crump, previously argued that the circumstances surrounding his disappearance and death were highly unusual and inconsistent with a standard drowning. Meanwhile, prosecutor Angel Myers McIlrath criticized outside commentators, stating that influencers attempted to exploit the tragedy to create division, while emphasizing that the community remains united.
