In a widely circulated interview, Warren Hudson—the self-described best friend of Nolan Wells—has vehemently denied rumors connecting him to the 18-year-old’s death or alleging he tampered with Wells’ phone.
The tragic disappearance and death of Wells, a Southwest Mississippi Community College football player who vanished during a July 4 trip to Horn Island and was found deceased two days later, has sparked intense public scrutiny and online theories.
Speaking with online commentator Brandon Tatum, Hudson broke his silence to clarify what transpired on the water and push back against allegations that friends abandoned or harmed Wells. According to Hudson, the group experienced mechanical trouble with their boat’s bilge pump and claimed Wells chose to remain behind on the island with a female acquaintance while others dealt with the issue.
Hudson directly addressed rampant speculation regarding Wells’ cell phone, which was later located by Wells’ family on land at a friend’s house via Life360. Family attorney Ben Crump and Wells’ parents had previously raised concerns over why the teenager would leave his phone behind and questioned whether messages had been erased.
Hudson further explained that leaving phones on the boat or on land is standard practice during water outings around Horn Island to avoid saltwater damage, challenging claims that the missing device pointed to foul play.
The circumstances surrounding Wells’ death remain under active investigation by local authorities. An independent autopsy commissioned by the family returned an “undetermined” cause of death pending further forensic testing.
Meanwhile, civil rights attorney Ben Crump announced that local prosecutors have agreed to present the full investigative findings to a grand jury once law enforcement completes its inquiry. The Congressional Black Caucus and community leaders, including Rev. Al Sharpton, continue to demand a thorough and transparent probe to bring full clarity to the tragedy.
