After nearly seven years trapped in development limbo, two-time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali has officially broken his silence regarding Marvel Studios’ troubled Blade reboot. Speaking candidly in a recent profile, the 52-year-old actor confirmed he has completely walked away from the project and made it clear that the film is no longer happening with him attached.
The announcement puts an end to one of the most notoriously delayed productions in Marvel Cinematic Universe history.
During an interview with GQ, Ali expressed his decision to move forward, pointing out that Marvel Studios possessed all the necessary resources to bring the daywalker to life if they had truly prioritized it:
“No offense to them. I’ve been doing this professionally for pushing 30 years now, and one thing I’ve learned is that what is for you is for you and what is not is not. For whatever reason, that project is not for me. If they wanted to do it, we would’ve done it. So I have to move on, and I have moved on.”
“Again, you had me under contract, they have billions of dollars, if they wanted to do the movie, we would’ve done the movie. So we’re not doing the movie.”
A History of Delays: First announced at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019, the reboot cycled through multiple directors, screenwriters, and complete story overhauls before being pulled from the release calendar entirely.
Channeling the Training: Ali revealed that over a year of intensive martial arts and physical preparation for Blade was not wasted; he channeled those physical skills directly into his upcoming action thriller, Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, directed by former Blade filmmaker Bassam Tariq.
Marvel’s Response: Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige previously expressed regret over the project’s development struggles, acknowledging that the studio ultimately couldn’t settle on a script concept they felt confident executing.
When asked where fans should direct lingering questions regarding the character’s future in the MCU, Ali delivered a definitive closing statement:
“I feel ready to move on from the Blade questions. Those questions are for them. They didn’t want to do it, so they should answer that question.”
