San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan narrowly avoided life-altering facial disfigurement following a severe car crash on July 14, 2026.
Speaking on PFT Live, NBC Sports analyst and former NFL quarterback Chris Simms a close personal friend of Shanahan shared harrowing new details about the incident, revealing that the 46-year-old coach came extraordinarily close to losing his right eye.
“Jarring” Photos and a Massive Facial Scar
Simms explained that he learned about the collision shortly after it occurred when Shanahan’s wife, Mandy, texted photos of the injuries directly to him and his wife.
“When you first see it, and it’s fresh, and some of the cuts are still wide open, I mean, it’s jarring,” Simms said. “He was this close to maybe losing his right eye. The scar is so big right here… All of that stuff was just crazy to see.”
The 49ers kept details of the crash private for 11 days before officially confirming the incident at the start of training camp. In addition to facial lacerations requiring 40 stitches, Shanahan sustained:
Broken Bones: A broken nose, three fractured ribs, and a broken left hand.
Severe Concussion: A lingering, severe concussion that delayed his full return to coaching duties.
Emotional Impact: Significant emotional distress over the severity of the wreck and concern for the female driver of the other vehicle involved.
While Shanahan’s physical facial wounds have begun to heal, his recovery from the concussion continue to impact his availability.
General manager John Lynch confirmed that Shanahan is currently under the care of team doctors in a concussion-like protocol, limiting his presence on the field as assistant head coach Chris Foerster handles expanded duties during early training camp practices.
