Comedy legend Kenan Thompson is stepping up to the judging table once again for America’s Got Talent. NBC officially announced that the Saturday Night Live star will serve as a guest judge starting Tuesday, September 1, taking over Simon Cowell’s seat while the executive producer recovers from a planned medical procedure.
Cowell’s absence follows a routine back surgery to address ongoing issues linked to his 2020 electric bike accident. Host Terry Crews addressed Cowell’s temporary departure during a live broadcast, sharing that while the operation was not an emergency, it was necessary and could not be postponed.
A Familiar Role: This isn’t Thompson’s first time stepping in for Cowell—he previously subbed on the AGT panel back in 2020 under similar circumstances following Cowell’s initial back injury.
The Panel Lineup: Thompson will join returning judges Howie Mandel, Sofía Vergara, and Mel B for the Season 21 live Quarterfinals.
Golden Opportunity: As a guest judge, Thompson is expected to take on full panel duties, including participating in live evaluations and potentially awarding a Golden Buzzer during the performance round.
Cowell is expected to return to the series later in September following a brief recovery period. In the meantime, Thompson’s veteran comedy background and long-standing history with NBC make him a natural fit to maintain the high energy at the judges’ table.
