Jennifer Aniston and her boyfriend, life coach and author Jim Curtis, made a rare joint public appearance at the 92nd Street Y in New York City on Wednesday night to celebrate the release of his new book, The Book of Possibility. During the event—where Aniston onstage interviewed Curtis—the 50-year-old transformational coach spoke candidly about a terrifying medical crisis from his 20s that resulted in chronic nerve damage, partial paralysis, and a lifelong limp.

Curtis recalled sitting in a New York City emergency room after experiencing excruciating body pain. Doctors subsequently discovered lesions on his spinal cord, causing partial paralysis and severe nerve damage.

Hiding the Truth out of Shame: Curtis admitted that for years, he hid the true cause of his limp from others out of embarrassment. “I would say I got into a motorcycle accident,” Curtis revealed. “I was so shameful that I had a medical condition… I thought the motorcycle accident was at least a little macho.”

Shifting from Victim to Empowerment: Overcoming the diagnosis required years of personal growth, self-love, and mindset transformation. “What I’m saying is that you don’t have to live as the victim. You don’t have to live in your suffering,” Curtis told the audience. “It can become your power as soon as you accept and love them.”

When Aniston asked him how he coaches people who feel trapped in an unfulfilling life, Curtis emphasized that overcoming obstacles doesn’t require rash decisions, but resilience. “There’s a reality of life too… But I will say this: you don’t have to let fear stop you from living your dream,” he shared.
