Record-breaking big-wall speed climber Jake Whisenant has died at the age of 30 following an accident in California’s Sierra Nevada mountain range. The Tulare County Sheriff’s Office Coroner recorded his passing on August 3, leaving the global rock climbing community in mourning.
Whisenant gained widespread national acclaim after setting a historic speed record on Yosemite National Park’s famous El Capitan. Partnering with Brant Hysell, the pair scaled the 2,000-foot “Lurking Fear” route in just 2 hours, 55 minutes, and 32 seconds—shattering a 20-year-old record held by legends Yuji Hirayama and Nick Fowler.
