TikTok content creator and Oklahoma hairstylist Sara Gilson (who also went by Sara Duffey) was tragically killed in a murder-suicide by her estranged husband, Jeremiah “Shawn” Duffey, less than two weeks after posting a viral video accusing him of being a pedophile.
The body of the 43-year-old mother and her 48-year-old estranged husband were discovered late Thursday, July 23, inside her home in Owasso, Oklahoma. Owasso Police confirmed that Duffey shot Gilson before turning the gun on himself after violating an active protective order.
Chilling details surrounding the emergency dispatch reveal the terrifying final moments inside the home. Emergency dispatchers received a call from a neighbor after Gilson’s son ran to a nearby door pleading for help.
During the frantic call, dispatchers overheard screaming and crying coming from the background, followed immediately by a loud bang before line audio cut out. Owasso Police officers arriving on the scene shortly after 11:15 p.m. located both Gilson and Duffey deceased from gunshot wounds.
On July 11, Gilson posted a video participating in a popular TikTok trend mimicking a Netflix true-crime documentary interview. In the clip, she sat in front of a camera accompanied by onscreen text:
“Preparing for when Netflix drops a documentary about my soon to be ex husband who I just found out is a pedophile.”
She captioned the video, “I wish I was joking. #plottwist #netflix #documentary,” a post that quickly resurfaced and went viral following news of her tragic death.
Court records reveal that Gilson had filed for an emergency protective order against Duffey in June after learning of serious allegations regarding his conduct as a youth basketball coach.
The mother of a 15-year-old girl on the team had also filed a protective order against Duffey, alleging he engaged in inappropriate touching, sent inappropriate messages, invited the minor to his hotel room during a tournament, and attempted to pay her to remain silent.
Protective Order Granted: A judge ordered Duffey to vacate the couple’s home and remain at least 100 yards away from Gilson.
History of Threats: In court filings, Gilson noted that Duffey possessed firearms, made suicide threats, and went missing after being confronted.
Active Protection Order: The protective order had been extended through late August before Duffey breached the home on July 23.
Gilson is survived by her two sons, and community members have launched support efforts to assist her family following the horrific tragedy.
