The iconic medical universe that has dominated network television for over two decades is officially packing its bags and heading south. On Tuesday, May 19, 2026, ABC handed a straight-to-series order to a brand-new, untitled Grey’s Anatomy spinoff. The upcoming medical drama trades the rainy, fast-paced streets of Seattle for the rugged landscapes of the Lone Star State.
The Greys Anatomy Texas spinoff Shonda Rhimes 2026 project brings together franchise mastermind Shonda Rhimes and current Grey’s Anatomy showrunner Meg Marinis as co-creators and writers. Longtime franchise anchor Ellen Pompeo is also officially on board to executive produce the expansion under the Shondaland banner.
“The Last Chance for Care Before Miles of Nowhere”
Shifting drastically away from the cutting-edge, high-tech urban environment of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, the new series will shine a spotlight on the intense realities of rural American medicine. According to the official logline released by ABC, the show is described as:
“…an edgy drama about a team at a West Texas rural medical center the last chance for care before miles of nowhere.”
The dramatic premise positions the franchise to tackle modern healthcare access disparities and resource scarcity in remote communities, all while delivering the high-stakes medical emergencies and emotionally charged relationship drama that fans have loved since 2005.
For Marinis, a Houston native who took over as the flagship show’s head showrunner in 2024, the opportunity to ground the beloved franchise in her home territory is a massive personal milestone. “This opportunity will bring new characters and stories to life that will embody the same heart, emotion, and connection audiences have loved from Grey’s for more than two decades—all set in my home state of Texas,” Marinis shared in an official press statement.
While the Grey’s Anatomy universe has previously expanded with the highly successful, long-running dramas Private Practice (six seasons) and Station 19 (seven seasons), this Texas venture marks several structural “firsts” for the Shondaland empire:
• Geographic Shift: It is the very first show in the franchise to take place completely outside of the West Coast, breaking away from the established hubs of Seattle and Los Angeles.
• Fresh Faces: Unlike its predecessors, which were built around legacy main characters (Dr. Addison Montgomery and Ben Warren), the Texas-set show will be led by a entirely new, unannounced ensemble cast.
Despite featuring a fresh lineup of doctors, production insiders confirm the drama will still maintain definitive connective tissue to the flagship series, potentially utilizing established characters to bridge the gap. Netizens have already begun speculating that the show could link up with Dr. Levi Schmitt (Jake Borelli), who famously relocated to the Lone Star State upon his departure from Seattle in Season 21.
The massive series order signals that ABC still views the Grey’s Anatomy brand as its most valuable scripted commodity, even as the flagship series charges ahead into its historic 23rd season.
The currently untitled spinoff is being fast-tracked through active development by Shondaland and 20th Television. While an exact release date has not yet been set, the network has tentatively slated the drama to make its high-profile broadcast premiere as part of the midseason 2027 television lineup.
