Pop star Ed Sheeran took a moment during his Philadelphia concert to address the heavy cloud of controversy surrounding his current tour.
Opening the show, Sheeran spoke directly to the audience about the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
A Call for Humanity: “My heart has been broken by the scale of devastation and the loss of civilian lives, especially children’s lives,” Sheeran told the crowd.
Focusing on Music: The singer emphasized that he wants his performances to center around unity and shared humanity rather than getting caught up in politics.
The remarks follow massive public backlash after tour opener Macklemore was removed from the lineup following pro-Palestinian comments made on stage.
The Allegations: Macklemore claimed that billionaire New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft influenced the decision. Kraft’s company owns Gillette Stadium, where the NFL team plays and where Sheeran is scheduled to perform later in the month.
Sheeran’s Response: Sheeran has denied any personal involvement in removing Macklemore, shifting responsibility to the tour promoter. With several supporting acts choosing to opt out, Sheeran has performed many of his recent Loop Tour concerts solo.
