Marvel Studios delivered a groundbreaking announcement during its San Diego Comic-Con Hall H presentation, confirming that British actor David Jonsson (Alien: Romulus, Industry) will take on the mantle of Prince T’Challa II in Black Panther 3.

Director Ryan Coogler returned to the stage alongside returning cast members Letitia Wright and Winston Duke to officially announce the third installment, setting a theatrical release date of December 15, 2028.

Following the tragic passing of Chadwick Boseman in 2020, Marvel chose not to recast the original King T’Challa. Instead, 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever closed by introducing a young child named Toussaint—revealed to be T’Challa and Nakia’s son, bearing his father’s Wakandan name.

In Black Panther 3, Jonsson will portray the adult Prince T’Challa II as he comes of age and navigates his path toward the Wakandan throne.

“Thank you to this amazing family that I have the honor and the privilege and the blessing to join,” Jonsson shared on stage to cheers from the Hall H crowd. “Believe me, the honor is entirely mine.”

Beyond the major casting announcement, Coogler confirmed key technical and cast details for the upcoming MCU chapter:

Large-Format Celluloid: Black Panther 3 will become the first MCU film shot entirely on 70mm large-format film.

Denzel Washington Joins: Two-time Academy Award winner Denzel Washington is confirmed for a role specifically written for him by Coogler.

Returning Favorites: Letitia Wright (Shuri) and Winston Duke (M’Baku) will reprise their roles alongside Jonsson.
