True brotherhood in country music was on full display in Las Vegas. On Sunday night, May 17, 2026, Texas country traditionalist Cody Johnson reached the absolute pinnacle of his career at the 61st Academy of Country Music (ACM) Awards, taking home the night’s highest honor: Entertainer of the Year. However, it was his incredibly raw, unscripted acceptance speech—where he dedicated the career-defining trophy to fellow nominee Luke Combs—that stole the hearts of millions watching on Prime Video.

The Cody Johnson Entertainer of the Year Luke Combs ACM Awards 2026 milestone marked Johnson’s very first win in the premier category, capping off a massive multi-trophy evening at the MGM Grand Garden Arena where he also clinched Male Artist of the Year.

Having already used up his prepared thank-you notes during his Male Artist acceptance speech earlier in the night, the 38-year-old “Dirt Cheap” singer admittedly took the stage completely empty-handed for the finale. After reflecting on his childhood dreams of playing music and calling the stage “the greatest drug introduced on planet Earth,” Johnson shifted his focus to a dedication he noted the audience “probably didn’t expect.”

Johnson threw it back to 2023, recalling his time serving as a supporting act on Combs’ massive world tour, specifically highlighting a heartbreaking sacrifice he watched Combs make while they were performing across the globe.

“There’s a man that was up for this award that I personally watched devote his life to country music,” Johnson shared passionately from the podium. “I was there the night in Australia when his wife gave birth to one of their sons. And I watched the anguish, I watched the defeat on his face for not being there, because he was across the world playing music in a sold-out arena.”

Despite the immense emotional weight of missing the birth of his second son, Beau, Combs still went out and gave the international crowd everything he had.

“The next night, right after, I watched him get on stage and absolutely murder the stage, and go on stage and play country music and preach the message of country music to a bunch of Australians across the world,” Johnson added. “So, tonight I want to dedicate my first Entertainer of the Year award to my buddy, Luke Combs. I love you, brother.”

Combs, who wasn’t in attendance at the Las Vegas ceremony to witness the tribute live, was part of a stacked, hyper-competitive Entertainer of the Year nominee field that also included Jelly Roll, Megan Moroney, Chris Stapleton, Morgan Wallen, and reigning titleholder Lainey Wilson.

While the trophy cements Johnson as an elite, stadium-level titan of modern country music, his speech heavily emphasized that his primary identity remains firmly anchored away from the bright lights of the entertainment industry. Gesturing to his wife, Brandi, who was spotted wiping away tears in the audience, Johnson reminded fans of his tight-knit roots.

“I just want you all to know that when I go home, I take my phone and turn it face down. When I go home, I’m a husband, I’m a father, I’m a cattle rancher,” Johnson stated proudly. “And as soon as I step on the jet, as soon as I step on the bus, all I look forward to is seeing you again, because I can’t wait to get back on that stage so we can experience those emotions together.”
