Christopher Anne “Chris” Boldt Affleck—a lifelong public school educator, dedicated civil rights activist, and mother to Oscar-winning actors Ben and Casey Affleck has passed away at the age of 83. Her family announced her passing following a battle with pancreatic cancer, confirming that she died peacefully in her sleep.
In a touching tribute shared by her loved ones, her family noted that after receiving her diagnosis in December, her ultimate wish was to live to see her grandson graduate high school. She achieved that goal, attending the ceremony surrounded by family on May 31, before passing away two days later on June 2.
Long before her sons achieved international stardom in Hollywood, Chris Anne established a legacy grounded in public service and grassroots activism. Raised in New York City, she went on to become one of the first Radcliffe women to receive a Harvard diploma.
Rather than chasing lucrative corporate careers, she dedicated 35 years of her life to teaching elementary public school students in Massachusetts. Beyond the classroom, she was an original Freedom Rider during the 1960s civil rights movement, traveling to the Deep South to fight for equality and later advocating for environmental and human rights initiatives well into her retirement.
“My mother taught public school, went to Harvard and then got her master’s there,” Ben Affleck previously shared in an interview reflecting on her influence. “She dedicated her life to helping others, and that grounded everything we did.”
Chris Anne played a pivotal role in nurturing her sons’ passion for the arts. She used her personal connections to help link a young Ben Affleck with casting opportunities, launching an acting journey that would eventually earn both Ben and Casey multiple Academy Awards.
Through it all, Chris Anne remained a fixture by her sons’ sides during major Hollywood milestones. Fans fondly remember her joining Ben on the red carpet at the 70th Annual Academy Awards in 1998, where he and Matt Damon won Best Original Screenplay for Good Will Hunting.
Chris Anne is survived by her sons, Ben and Casey, and her five beloved grandchildren.
