A major twist has reshaped the legal battle surrounding former Florida gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum. Following his recent arrest in Daphne, Alabama, the 46-year-old former Tallahassee mayor has tested completely negative for drugs.
The clean results from an independent, comprehensive drug screening provide a massive boost to Gillum’s defense, casting a very different light on the initial police report.
According to reports first published by TMZ, Gillum’s legal team authorized an immediate, multi-panel drug test following his release on bond. The independent screening evaluated his system for methamphetamine, THC, and a wide array of other controlled substances.
The results came back entirely negative across the board, proving that the politician did not have any illegal substances in his system at the time of his arrest.
While the negative drug test is a significant victory for Gillum’s public image, his legal team still has to address the physical evidence collected by Daphne police. Officers initially pulled Gillum over for erratic driving, subsequently searching the vehicle and recovering a pipe and three grams of a substance that field-tested positive for methamphetamine.
However, defense attorneys are prepared to argue that the clean drug panel proves Gillum had no active involvement with the recovered contraband. With a trial and further hearings on the horizon in Baldwin County, these medical findings will play a pivotal role in his defense strategy.
