Former First Lady Michelle Obama has shared heartfelt reflections on the challenges she faced while raising her daughters, Malia (26) and Sasha (23), during her time in the White House. In a recent interview with Oprah Daily, Michelle candidly discussed the difficulties of balancing her role as a mother with the demands of being First Lady, admitting she often worried about “not doing well enough as a mom.”
As part of her promotional tour for her new book, Overcoming: A Workbook, Michelle revealed that motherhood was always her top priority. “I knew I wanted to be home as often as possible, to do dinner together, to go to the girls’ activities, and give them as normal a life as possible,” she said. Despite her best efforts, she acknowledged missing some school events and feeling guilt about not being fully present at times.
Michelle emphasized the importance of self-compassion and learning to grant herself “a little grace.” She hopes her story will inspire others to do the same, reminding parents that “we’re all just doing the best we can.”
Her new book, released on December 3, offers tools and techniques to help readers navigate life’s challenges. In a social media post, she encouraged her followers to embrace the workbook as a resource to “reimagine how you want to show up in the world.”
Throughout her years in the public eye, Michelle, alongside Barack Obama, prioritized creating a stable, grounded environment for Malia and Sasha, often with the help of Michelle’s late mother, Marian Robinson. Her openness about parenting struggles adds another layer to her inspiring legacy as a mother, leader, and advocate for self-care and balance.
