How Hugh Jackman Snagged Wolverine After Dougray Scott’s Exit

Hugh Jackman’s portrayal of Wolverine in X-Men catapulted him to stardom, but the iconic role almost belonged to another actor. Initially, Dougray Scott, known for Ever After and Mission: Impossible II, was cast as the metal-clawed mutant. However, production delays on Mission: Impossible II and a minor on-set injury prevented Scott from stepping into Logan’s boots.

Tom Cruise, a producer on Mission: Impossible II, reportedly refused to let Scott leave the set to join X-Men. With Wolverine’s fate hanging in the balance, the X-Men team auditioned Jackman, an Australian actor relatively unknown in the U.S. Despite doubts—Jackman felt too tall at 6’3” to play the famously short mutant—he landed the role, thanks to a standout audition and a bit of luck.

Jackman’s debut as Wolverine in 2000 turned him into a Hollywood leading man, while Scott continued a steady acting career, most recently appearing in the BBC miniseries Vigil. Though Scott missed out on the blockbuster spotlight, Jackman’s ascent as Wolverine remains one of the most celebrated casting shifts in movie history.
