Nigerian rapper and music producer Phyno, born Chibuzor Nelson Azubuike, has opened up about the pivotal decision to embrace rapping in Igbo—a move that has become the cornerstone of his career and set him apart in the global music scene.

Speaking on the In My Opinion podcast, the artist shared how his cultural heritage inspired his artistic direction. Reflecting on his early influences, Phyno said, “Growing up, I listened to emcees like Busta Rhymes, Jay-Z, 2Pac, and Biggie. I had that Western influence in my music, and I started rapping in English. But at some point, I had to find myself.”

Phyno described the moment of clarity when he realized the unique value of his heritage.

I asked myself, ‘What am I going to sell to the world? If I go to the UK, will I sell English to them? They own the English language. If I go to America, I’m selling Igbo to them. That’s what makes me unique.’ You can’t sell what they already have. If you sell what they don’t have, it stands out.

Beyond his lyrics, Phyno’s commitment to his Igbo roots extends to his artistic expression. He shared,

I grew up in a highlife-influenced neighborhood, and I incorporate those sounds into my music. I also wear Igbo traditional attire to represent my culture. I have to look different because I’m not just representing myself, I’m representing my people.

His latest album, Full Time Job (2024), is a vibrant showcase of this philosophy. The project combines Igbo culture with contemporary hip-hop and features collaborations with prominent artists, further cementing his status as a pioneer in blending tradition with modernity. This follows his critically acclaimed 2021 album Something to Live For, which similarly celebrated his heritage and lyrical depth.

Through his music and style, Phyno continues to honor Igbo culture while breaking boundaries in the global music industry. His journey underscores the power of embracing one’s roots to create something truly unique.
