Tottenham’s Rodrigo Bentancur Suspended for Racist Remark About Son Heung-min

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has been handed a seven-match suspension after making a racist comment about his teammate, Son Heung-min, during a June interview on Uruguayan TV channel Canal 10. When asked to show the shirt of a Spurs player, Bentancur remarked that Son and his cousins “all look the same,” a comment widely considered offensive for its racial undertones.

Although Bentancur apologized immediately after the incident, the Football Association (FA) categorized the remark as an “aggravated breach” under its rules, which address any inappropriate references to ethnicity, race, or nationality. The FA launched an investigation and charged Bentancur on September 12 for breaching FA Rule E3, which prohibits players from using abusive or insulting language.

An independent regulatory commission found Bentancur guilty, issuing him a seven-match domestic suspension along with a £100,000 fine. As a result, the 27-year-old will miss key matches, including fixtures against Manchester City, Fulham, and Chelsea. However, Bentancur will still be eligible to play in Tottenham’s Europa League games against Roma and Rangers.
