Nigeria has officially submitted the Hausa epic Mai Martaba as its entry for the International Feature Film (IFF) category at the 97th Academy Awards. Produced and directed by Prince Daniel, the film delivers a rich narrative on power, love, greed, and betrayal within an ancient African kingdom, challenging norms and celebrating the resilience of female leadership.
Set during the height of the Trans-Saharan trade era, the film portrays the once-thriving kingdom’s prosperity—cut short by fierce internal power struggles within the dominant Agadashawa ruling clan. Shot on location in Daura, Katsina State, Mai Martaba combines historical depth with stunning visuals that bring the past to life.
The Nigerian Official Section Committee (NOSC) selected Mai Martaba for “its relevant themes of inclusive leadership and diverse voices in decision-making, along with its technical and visual appeal.” The film received the highest votes from the 15-member committee, which includes industry luminaries like NOSC Chairperson and actress Stephanie Linus, Directors’ Guild of Nigeria President Dr. Victor Okhai, actress Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, and prolific producer Emem Isong.
The IFF Award by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) honors films produced outside the United States with dialogue that is at least 50% non-English. Finalists will be shortlisted on December 17, 2024, with the top five nominees revealed on January 17, 2025.
As Nigeria’s third submission in this category, Mai Martaba is anticipated to break the longstanding “Oscars jinx” and advance to the final round. The 97th Oscars ceremony will take place on March 2, 2025, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California, with a live broadcast to over 200 territories worldwide.
