Pop superstar Harry Styles is opening up about his journey with mental health, revealing how a former relationship helped him break free from intense public anxiety during the height of his early career. Speaking in a candid interview for Rolling Stone, the “As It Was” singer reflected on the intense pressure he faced during his time with One Direction, admitting that constant public attention made him feel trapped and anxious whenever he stepped outside.
Looking back at his rise to global stardom, Styles explained that his early days in the boy band were defined by extreme isolation. Between relentless fanbase attention and security protocols, he spent much of his time confined to hotel rooms or his own home.
“I think in the early days, when I was in the band, so much of the hotel experience felt very locked-in,” Styles shared. “When I’d be home, it felt like, ‘Oh, it’s not safe for me to be out’.”
The turning point came when he began dating an “outgoing” partner who pushed him out of his comfort zone during a trip to London. Worrying that she would think he was “nuts” if they spent three days locked inside his house, the pair decided to explore the city on foot instead. Walking through the streets broke down his psychological barrier, teaching him that it was okay to simply exist in public spaces.
Styles noted that learning to walk around freely transformed his life, allowing him to stay grounded and connected to the world around him as an artist and individual.
