The View co-host Sunny Hostin is opening up with deeper details regarding a crucial behind-the-scenes conversation with actress and singer Cynthia Erivo following intense public backlash. Hostin faced severe criticism online after breaking down why prosecutors declined to file criminal charges in 2024 against seven male students accused of sexually assaulting a female Cornell University student.
While working on a film project about consent and sexual assault in Paris, Erivo reached out to Hostin privately after watching a viral clip of the segment. Speaking on The View’s Behind the Table podcast with executive producer Brian Teta, Hostin recalled Erivo’s supportive yet firm intervention.
“She called me and said, ‘Sis, I know you, and I know your heart and your life’s work has been about protecting women and children. But the clip that I saw doesn’t reflect who you are,'” Hostin shared. Erivo noted that while both share a direct and blunt communication style, it is vital to present opinions in a way that audiences can readily receive.
Reflecting on the advice, Hostin acknowledged that by strictly “leading with the law”—highlighting New York’s restrictive legal barriers regarding voluntary intoxication and the immense threshold required to prove lack of consent her core message was easily misunderstood as defending the accused.
Adopting Erivo’s guidance to “lead with empathy” rather than dry legal analysis, Hostin clarified her stance, emphasizing that the situation is deeply troubling and that the underlying New York laws desperately need to be changed. Meanwhile, the survivor, identified as Jane Doe, continues pursuing accountability through a civil lawsuit filed against the accused men, Cornell University, and connected organizations.
