Bill Gates is raising the alarm over what could happen if increasingly advanced AI systems end up in the hands of people trying to cause serious harm. During an interview with NBC’s Meet the Press, the Microsoft co-founder said AI could potentially play a role in disasters resulting in up to a billion deaths. His Bill Gates AI warning centers on the combination of highly capable AI tools and malicious actors, which he says could create risks far beyond those associated with earlier technologies.
Gates also argued that AI companies should not be expected to police themselves. He called for governments, lawmakers, and law enforcement agencies to put enforceable safeguards and monitoring systems in place as the technology develops. Potential threats being debated include AI-assisted cyberattacks, the spread of dangerous biological knowledge, nuclear escalation, fraud, and disinformation targeting critical infrastructure.
However, researchers remain divided over how likely the most extreme scenarios are. A RAND analysis cited in the discussion found that current AI systems cannot independently trigger nuclear weapons because of existing safeguards, while noting that the risk could change if AI becomes embedded in nuclear decision-making or gains unauthorized access. Gates’ comments add to a growing debate among tech leaders, policymakers, and researchers about how to regulate AI without stifling innovation. He has previously compared the arrival of AI to the early days of the internet and the personal computer, both of which he said required guardrails.
