Speaking on the incident, Sue Pemberton of the California Academy of Sciences noted that removing parts from marine mammals is not only shocking but strictly illegal.
Federal Protections: Interfering with or taking parts from a marine mammal carcass is a federal crime under the Marine Mammal Protection Act.
Severe Penalties: Violators face serious legal consequences, including criminal fines of up to $36,000 and up to a year in prison.
This alarming event is part of a broader pattern of similar occurrences along the California shoreline. Authorities noted that a separate decapitated sea lion was previously discovered further down the coast in Pacific Grove, highlighting an ongoing issue with individuals tampering with protected wildlife remains.
