Jasmine Crockett for recognizing him during his R&B Tour stop at AT&T Stadium in Arlington on September 12, while also acknowledging that she could face backlash for the move. “I apologize for any backlash you have to deal with for awarding me,” Brown wrote, adding that he’s “not political” and moves off “frequency and energy.” He ended the message by saying he’s extremely grateful and thanking her once again for the honor.
The honor itself was a congressional record recognition presented onstage by Crockett, who was joined by Texas State Rep. Venton Jones and music producer RoccStar. “We are experiencing Black joy at the highest level,” Crockett told the crowd. “And I wanted to make sure we document that at the congressional level”. The entry, titled “Recognizing the Artistry of Chris Brown and Usher Raymond,” commends the pair for their “extraordinary accomplishments” and impact on contemporary R&B.
Crockett has faced significant backlash for honoring Brown given his legal history, including his 2009 felony assault conviction involving then-girlfriend Rihanna. Critics like author Roxane Gay called it “such a bizarre and unacceptable misstep” . Brown pleaded guilty in July to an affray charge in the U.K. stemming from a 2023 nightclub incident and is scheduled for sentencing in October. For his part, Brown chose to focus on the significance of the recognition rather than the criticism, thanking Crockett, Jones, and Texas in his message.
