Family tensions are spilling into the public eye as legendary singer Gladys Knight continues her tour schedule amid growing concerns from her family.

According to recent reports from The Detroit News, Knight’s son, Shanga Hankerson, has once again spoken out about the 82-year-old music icon’s demanding schedule.

Fears Over Management: Hankerson expressed deep worry that Knight’s husband and manager, William McDowell, will keep her working “until she passes away,” alleging that McDowell never truly intended to halt her tour dates.

Conflicting Announcements: The renewed friction follows an announcement by Knight in August stating she would be “easing into fewer performances” to spend more time with her family, though she has continued to hit the stage.

Recent Performance Concerns: Accounts from recent shows have highlighted questions surrounding her stamina, with backup singers stepping in to assist with vocals and cues, while other footage shows her delivering classic hits.

In response to the accusations, McDowell has firmly denied forcing his wife to perform, noting that while she has “good days and bad,” she has no dementia diagnosis and genuinely wants to keep singing. Furthermore, Knight herself has previously pushed back against her son’s claims, maintaining that she is healthy, happy, and performing by choice.
