A man waving a Palestinian flag was tackled and arrested after running onto the field at Yankee Stadium during Friday night’s Subway Series game between the Yankees and Mets. The Yankee Stadium field invader entered from the left-field seats during the seventh inning and sprinted toward center field, briefly evading security before being brought down on the outfield grass. The incident occurred at exactly 9:11 p.m. on the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, according to multiple reports.
The man, identified as 38-year-old Kelly Marcucci of Long Island, was wearing a baseball jersey emblazoned with the words “No Kings”. As security escorted him off the field, fans erupted in chants of “USA!” and threw beer cans toward him from the stands. The NYPD confirmed Marcucci was charged with trespass and interference with a professional sporting event, both misdemeanors. He received a desk appearance ticket and will answer the charges in court at a later date.
The disruption came hours after the Yankees and Mets held a solemn pregame ceremony honoring the nearly 3,000 lives lost on 9/11. Members of the 2001 Yankees team, including Derek Jeter, Jorge Posada, Mariano Rivera, and Paul O’Neill, took the field for a moment of silence and the ceremonial first pitch. Yankees manager Aaron Boone said before the game that the night carried “a lot of weight,” calling it “an honor” for the two New York teams to play on such a significant date.
