Mel Gibson is catching heat for allegedly mocking a deaf American Sign Language interpreter, and it was all caught on video.
During his appearance at Saturday’s Fan Expo Canada in Toronto, Gibson walked onstage behind an interpreter who was signing for deaf audience members. As he made his way to the moderator, Gibson turned to the crowd and flashed some quick hand gestures of his own, mimicking the interpreter from behind. The moment was captured on video and quickly spread online.
While moderator Liam Crowley didn’t seem taken aback by Gibson’s actions, social media had a much different take. One person on X wrote, “This is despicable!” and another called him “a gross human being.” Some users defended Gibson, saying more context was needed before jumping to conclusions. However, others pointed to his history of controversial behavior, with one critic writing, “This kind of tracks given Mel’s track record with racist and misogynistic views.”
