Former First Lady Michelle Obama recently shared an exceptionally honest take on becoming an empty nester. Speaking on the IMO Podcast alongside guest Jon Stewart, Obama confessed with a laugh that she doesn’t miss having her grown daughters, Malia (28) and Sasha (25), living at home.

While former President Barack Obama wept when sending their daughters off to college, Michelle took a far more practical, lighthearted approach to their departure.

No More Friday Night Worry: Obama revealed that Friday nights are no longer “wrecked with terror and fear” over where her daughters are or what they are doing. She noted that she thoroughly enjoys watching their growth and emancipation from a distance.

Reclaiming Her Time: When asked if she missed the hands-on daily job of parenting, Obama candidly replied that she was “good,” adding that she loves having a schedule that belongs entirely to her.

Maintaining Strong Bonds: Despite enjoying her independence, she clarified that her relationship with her daughters remains tight-knit, noting she was even meeting them for dinner later that same evening.

Malia, who graduated from Harvard University in 2021, and Sasha, who earned her degree from the University of Southern California in 2023, have both fully launched into their independent adult lives. Michelle’s relatable commentary has struck a chord with parents nationwide, shedding light on the liberating side of navigating an empty nest.
