The future of DC Studios’ leadership appears to have been decided. According to a recent report from The Wrap, Paramount plans to keep James Gunn and Peter Safran as the co-heads of DC Studios regardless of the outcome of the Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Skydance merger.
The report indicates that Paramount executives intend to maintain the current DC Studios leadership, even as the massive $111 billion merger faces legal challenges. This means Gunn and Safran would remain in charge of the DC Universe, alongside other Warner Bros. executives like Pam Abdy, Mike De Luca, and Richard Brener.
This decision comes despite recent box office struggles, including the disappointing performance of Supergirl, which raised questions about the future of the DCU. However, Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison has reportedly visited Gunn’s studio and expressed enthusiasm for the direction of the DC Universe.
The future of the Warner Bros. and Paramount merger remains uncertain. Paramount recently agreed not to close the deal until legal challenges are resolved or until June 1, 2027, whichever comes first. A federal judge has extended a temporary restraining order blocking the merger until at least August 18.
The potential merger comes after a period of significant change in the entertainment industry. Paramount and Warner Bros. would operate as separate studios if the deal closes, with each committing to produce 15 films per year. Gunn and Safran’s contracts were initially set to expire in 2026 or 2027, but this new report suggests they will be retained under any merger scenario.
