Former Sangamon County Sheriff’s deputy Sean Grayson, who was convicted in the fatal July 2024 shooting of 36-year-old Sonya Massey inside her home, has died in prison. The 32-year-old was serving a 20-year sentence following his October 2025 second-degree murder conviction. His attorney confirmed his death on Sunday, August 23, 2026, roughly seven months into his term.

Grayson had been battling Stage 4 colon cancer that had spread to his liver and lungs. However, the Illinois Prisoner Review Board unanimously denied his request for early medical release in July 2026.
