The Osun State Police Command has confirmed that singer Davido was the target of an attack on the convoy of Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke on Wednesday, August 19. Security escorts of the governor engaged unidentified men in a gun duel during the governor’s visit to the palace of the Ataoja of Osogbo, shortly after receiving his certificate of return from INEC. Davido and the governor’s children were in the convoy when the attack occurred.
Pandemonium broke out after unknown gunmen began shooting sporadically at the convoy, prompting the governor’s security detail to return fire. A 60-year-old man, Tajudeen Yusuf, was shot dead during the gun duel at the Itaolokan area of Osogbo. He was rushed to the University Teaching Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Confirming the incident, police spokesperson Abiodun Ojelabi said preliminary investigation revealed that members of the Eye Confraternity were after Davido. “One Adebayo Taoreed, popularly known as ‘Small Rugged,’ an ex-convict, a suspected notorious thug, and a member of Eye Confraternity, allegedly attempted to gain access to Davido but was resisted by members of his security team,” Ojelabi said . The ensuing confrontation attracted other suspected gang members, who temporarily blocked the entrance to the palace and obstructed the convoy’s movement.
The Police Command has commenced a full-scale investigation and intensified efforts to identify, apprehend, and bring the fleeing suspects to justice. The motive behind the attack remains unclear as investigations continue.
