Dame Julie Andrews has officially confirmed that she will not reprise her beloved role as Queen Clarisse Renaldi in The Princess Diaries 3. The 90-year-old Oscar winner, who starred alongside Anne Hathaway in the 2001 original and its 2004 sequel, revealed that she has stepped back from live-action film roles.
Speaking about the upcoming Disney sequel, Andrews explained that the creative team approached her throughout the past year, but she ultimately made the tough decision to decline. Addressing the Julie Andrews Princess Diaries 3 Queen Clarisse retired update, the legendary actress noted that the narrative rightfully belongs to Princess Mia Thermopolis.
“It was very, very hard to say ‘no,’ but I did. I felt this one would flourish very well and wouldn’t need Granny going in there at my age… I think I’m retired, really, would be about the best description for that.” — Julie Andrews
While Andrews will not appear on screen, Anne Hathaway remains committed to continuing the franchise with director Adele Lim at the helm. Meanwhile, Andrews continues to lend her iconic voice to projects like Netflix’s Bridgerton.
