Jorge Messi, Lionel Messi’s Father and Longtime Agent, Dies at 68

Jorge Messi, the father and long-time agent of soccer superstar Lionel Messi, has died at the age of 68. The Rosario native passed away on Friday, August 7, at a clinic in the Argentine city, according to reports and a confirmation from his son’s former club, Newell’s Old Boys.

Newell’s Old Boys, a club in Messi’s hometown, announced the news on social media, celebrating Jorge as a “pillar” who “with vision, rigor, and affection, supported the career of the best player of all time”. Club Atlético Newell’s Old Boys confirmed his death on Aug. 8, 2026, after reports that he had been ill, expressing their condolences to the family. His wife, Celia Cuccittini, survives him.

Jorge was more than just a father to the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner; he served as his son’s representative and adviser for much of his professional journey. Reports indicate he had been receiving treatment for an unspecified chronic illness. He had spent his final months at a medical center in Rosario and at home.

His health became a public concern during the 2026 FIFA World Cup when Lionel was seen crying after scoring a goal against Algeria. The player later confirmed that his tears were for a “difficult, complicated” personal reason, and the family subsequently issued a statement regarding Jorge’s health situation, asking for privacy.

Jorge was the person who traveled with a young Lionel to Barcelona for the trial that opened the doors to his legendary career with the Catalan club. He went on to handle all of his son’s major contract negotiations, including his transfers to Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Miami.
