Nigeria’s football powerhouse
From playing football on the streets of Ikorodu to becoming one of Africa’s most decorated female footballers, Asisat Oshoala has built a career defined by goals, trophies and resilience.
SHE STARTED FROM IKORODU
Oshoala’s football journey began on local pitches in Ikorodu, Lagos, where she often played with boys.
Her talent eventually took her from Nigeria to England, China and Spain, putting her on the global football stage. (Inside FIFA
Oshoala has been named African Women’s Footballer of the Year five times, in 2014, 2016, 2017, 2019 and 2022.
She has also won major club honours, including Spanish league titles and the UEFA Women’s Champions League. (Inside FIFA
Oshoala continues to be an important figure for the Super Falcons.
At WAFCON 2026, she scored Nigeria’s opening goal in the 1–0 win over Zambia before finding the net again in Nigeria’s 6–2 victory over Egypt.
Oshoala launched the Asisat Oshoala Foundation in 2015 to use sport to empower young girls in Nigeria.
Her journey has become bigger than football, she wants her success to inspire the next generation of African female athletes.
