Following the box office success of Antoine Fuqua’s biographical drama Michael, Lionsgate executive Adam Fogelson has confirmed that planning is officially underway for the second installment. The upcoming sequel will pick up where the original film concluded to complete the pop star’s story.
Lionsgate plans to begin production in late 2026 or early 2027, eyeing a premiere timeframe in late 2027 or the first half of 2028. Addressing the anticipated Michael Part 2 release date, executives noted that approximately 25% to 30% of usable footage was previously shot during the principal photography of the first movie.
“We are mostly focused right now on how to make sure we can deliver, at the right price, the biggest, best sequel. That is what the audience is going to want and deserve…”
The second chapter will shift focus toward the latter half of Jackson’s life and career. The story is set to explore his post-Bad era, broader cultural legacy, key personal relationships, and high-profile career milestones.
