“Bro, 4 years passed. Within 2 days, I’m not kidding, within 2 days of him passing, his label claimed that podcast,” Paul said on a recent episode. He expressed disbelief that a label would move so quickly to strike content from a deceased artist’s collaborator, especially when the episode had been cleared for years.
Oliver Tree died on June 14, 2026, at age 32 after the helicopter he was traveling in collided with another over Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The eccentric musician, known for hits like “Life Goes On” and “Miss You,” was in the middle of his world tour at the time. He had just performed in São Paulo on June 6 and was scheduled to play shows across multiple continents.
Paul’s frustration highlights a broader tension between creators and labels over copyright enforcement. The podcast episode, which originally aired four years ago, had been properly whitelisted, meaning Tree’s team had previously approved its use. For the label to reverse that approval immediately after Tree’s passing struck Paul as exploitative.
Whether the label will reverse the claim remains unclear. But the incident is another chapter in the complicated relationship between artists, labels, and the platforms where their work lives on.
