After decades away from the Hollywood spotlight, beloved comedy legend Rick Moranis made a triumphant, rare public appearance at San Diego Comic-Con, sending Hall H into an uproar as he took the stage to promote the upcoming sequel, Spaceballs: The New One.
The 73-year-old actor who stepped back from major screen acting in the 1990s was met with a roaring standing ovation from thousands of fans as he officially confirmed his return as the iconic villain Lord Dark Helmet.
“Combing the Crowd” for Dark Helmet
Before Moranis took the stage, panel moderator Kevin Smith staged an elaborate bit, pretending Moranis was missing. Costumed Spaceballs soldiers emerged into the audience armed with an oversized comb a classic homage to the 1987 original to literally “comb the crowd” for the actor.
Moranis was discovered hiding in plain sight among attendees wearing his character’s oversized black helmet. Unmasking himself to deafening applause, Moranis quipped about his extended hiatus from acting:
“I wasn’t really retired. I was just negotiating.”
He added that signing onto the sequel felt natural: “This came along at the right time. It just felt like this is it. It is the best decision I ever made. It’s like family to me.”
Moranis was joined on stage by co-star Daphne Zuniga (Princess Vespa), director Josh Greenbaum, writer/producer Josh Gad, and new cast additions Keke Palmer and Lewis Pullman. Franchise creator Mel Brooks, 100, made a hilarious video appearance to greet the crowd.
Honoring Originals: Josh Gad confirmed the sequel pays direct tribute to late original cast members, including John Candy, Joan Rivers, and Dom DeLuise.
Parodying Franchise Overload: The panel poked fun at modern Hollywood multi-phase franchises by unveiling an 11-phase roadmap titled “The Almighty Schwartz Saga,” pitching fake spin-offs planned through 2044.
Footage Tease: A exclusive trailer reel screened for the crowd featured Dark Helmet declaring “Somehow I have returned… somehow,” mocking modern sci-fi tropes.
Spaceballs: The New One is slated to hit theaters nationwide in April.
