Carnival Cruise Line has officially addressed a viral online controversy after footage surfaced showing a passenger using a dining fork to scratch her foot in a ship’s dining area. The incident, which triggered massive outrage and disgust across social media, prompted the cruise line to issue a public statement clarifying basic dining hygiene.
The widespread backlash began after an Instagram user posted multiple clips filmed onboard the Carnival Sunrise. In the videos, a passenger seated in the communal buffet area is initially seen bare-footed, aggressively scratching her foot with her hands before eating a slice of pizza.
In a subsequent clip, the guest escalates the behavior by taking a dining fork directly from the table to dig into the sole of her foot.
“Y’all see that nasty mess too?” another guest can be heard asking in the background of the original video before the behavior was formally reported to ship staff and management.
Taking to social media to directly address the viral footage, Carnival Cruise Line balanced tongue-in-cheek humor with a serious commitment to onboard sanitation standards:
“Hi Carnival cruisers,” the official statement read. “We can confirm that forks are intended for food, not foot care. Once we became aware of the situation, our team quickly addressed it with the guest and removed the utensil from service.”
The cruise line further emphasized that maintaining a sanitary environment remains an absolute priority across its ships:
Utensil Disposal: Staff confirmed the specific dining utensil was permanently removed from service and disposed of immediately.
Cleanliness Standards: Carnival noted that while the video generated “laughs and gasps online,” hygiene on its ships is “no joke” and enforced by crew daily.
Policy Enforcement: Under Carnival’s Code of Conduct, disruptive or highly unsanitary behavior can result in fines up to $500, stateroom confinement, or a complete ban from future sailings.
