Detroit’s iconic cyborg law enforcer is officially coming back online. Amazon MGM Studios has officially ordered an eight-episode television series based on the classic RoboCop franchise, set to stream globally on Prime Video. The long-brewing project which has been in quiet development since Amazon acquired MGM in 2022 brings a heavyweight creative team to helm the modern sci-fi revival.
The series will be written and run by Peter Ocko (Lodge 49, Black Sails), who serves as executive producer and showrunner. Joining him to steer the corporate-satire universe is horror heavyweight James Wan (The Conjuring, Saw), producing through his Blumhouse Atomic Monster banner alongside Michael Clear and Rob Hackett.
Crucially for longtime fans, original 1987 RoboCop co-creators Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner have officially signed on as executive producers to ensure the reboot captures the sharp, satirical spirit of Paul Verhoeven’s original masterpiece.
“What Paul Verhoeven created in 1987 was decades ahead of its time,” Wan said in a statement. “Its questions about technology, identity, and who corporations really serve have only grown more urgent. We’re working to honor what made the original iconic… while building something unmistakably new.”
According to the official logline released by Amazon MGM Studios, the narrative closely parallels the foundational lore of the original film while leaning heavily into modern concerns around artificial intelligence and privatized power:
Official Logline: “A giant tech conglomerate convinces the city to place a powerful robot on its police force—a robot implanted with the consciousness of a beloved, fallen officer.”
The series marks the franchise’s first live-action television adaptation since the four-part miniseries RoboCop: Prime Directives in 2001. While official casting and a target premiere window remain under wraps, the official series order signals that Amazon is ready to lean heavily into MGM’s deep intellectual property vault.
