Comedian and actress Rosie O’Donnell is speaking candidly about her decades-long relationship with body image, reflecting on an uncomfortable interaction with an Hollywood icon on the set of her breakout 1992 film. During an interview, the 64-year-old star revealed that legendary director Penny Marshall directly instructed her to drop weight while filming the beloved baseball classic A League of Their Own.
The revelation comes amid O’Donnell’s reflection on her recent 60-plus pound weight loss, offering context on how body standards in the entertainment industry shaped her early career insecurities.
Recalling the interaction from over three decades ago, O’Donnell shared how Marshall’s direct note impacted her on set. According to the former talk show host, the director approached her with a blunt request regarding her physical appearance:
“On League of Their Own, Penny Marshall didn’t help by saying, ‘Rosie, I want you to lose 20 pounds,'” O’Donnell recalled. “I’m like, ‘You think I carry it around for fun, Penny?'”
Looking back, O’Donnell admitted that the constant pressure surrounding her weight prevented her from fully appreciating her body at the time. “When I look back, I go, ‘God, I wish I could have enjoyed the size I was,'” she noted.
O’Donnell detailed how the anxiety over her appearance followed her into the peak of her television success. During her tenure on late-night and daytime television, her primary focus often strayed from her performances to how her body was perceived on camera.
“It’s very strange to just buy a pair of jeans that fit,” O’Donnell explained, contrasting her past experiences with her current health journey. “When I would do late-night, my biggest concern wasn’t my set it was, did I look fat?”
In recent years, O’Donnell has been transparent about her health journey, which includes managing Type 2 diabetes using Mounjaro alongside lifestyle changes. After losing significant weight, the star also underwent a lower deep plane facelift to address excess skin, sharing the updates openly with her followers.
Reflecting on her current size which ironically mirrors her weight during A League of Their Own O’Donnell feels far more grounded in her skin. “I’m now at that same weight,” she shared. “But I feel much healthier, more powerful in my own physicality.”
