Disney’s live-action ‘Moana’ is on track to lose approximately $100 million at the global box office, marking one of the studio’s most disappointing remake performances to date. The film opened to just $43 million domestically and $95 million worldwide against a staggering $250 million production budget, with marketing costs pushing the total investment to nearly $370 million.
The financial shortfall stems largely from timing. The original 2016 animated film is still fresh in audiences’ minds, and the billion-dollar animated sequel arrived just two years ago. Most successful Disney remakes like ‘The Lion King’ and ‘Beauty and the Beast’ waited an average of 27 years to capitalize on nostalgia. Critics also panned the film for being a near shot-for-shot re-creation of the original, earning a 34% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Analysts note that audiences want fresh stories, not carbon copies. “People wanted ‘Moana 3,’ not a remake of the original,” said Exhibitor Relations’ Jeff Bock. While the film earned an A- CinemaScore from audiences, it faces fierce competition from ‘Toy Story 5’ and ‘Minions & Monsters’. Disney’s lucrative remake strategy may need recalibration, but for now, ‘Moana’ stands as a costly lesson in timing.
