The high-pitched harmonies of Alvin, Simon, and Theodore are officially heading back to the big screen. Nearly a decade after their last live-action hybrid adventure, the beloved animated musical franchise is officially in line for a massive, modern-day revival. Former Nickelodeon and Paramount CEO Brian Robbins has acquired a 25% stake in the legendary IP through his new banner, Big Shot Pictures, with plans to introduce the singing rodents to a whole new generation.

Rather than rushing straight to theaters, the studio is taking a measured, digital-first approach to re-establish the Chipmunks in pop culture. The rollout will begin with a series of short-form social media campaigns designed to build viral momentum and reintroduce the trio’s classic antics to TikTok and Instagram feeds.

This digital runway leads directly to a brand-new, full-length theatrical feature film officially locked in for late 2028. The release is timed to coincide with the franchise’s historic 70th anniversary, marking seven decades since Ross Bagdasarian Sr. first sped up tape recorder speeds to create the iconic chipmunk voice in 1958.

While the announcement has generated plenty of nostalgia, the first-look promotional image of Alvin in his iconic red “A” hoodie immediately divided fans online. Social media quickly erupted with speculation that the sleek, hyper-polished new render relied on generative AI tools. Critics pointed to the slightly “soul-less” look of the character’s eyes, urging the studio to trust traditional, human animators over artificial intelligence as development progresses.

The studio has not yet confirmed whether the 2028 film will be fully animated or if it will return to the live-action hybrid style that defined the $1.3 billion 2000s film franchise. Regardless of the medium, the chase for the ultimate summer hit is officially back on.
