The early-2000s nostalgia wave has officially hit a fever pitch, bringing one of the most culturally significant Disney Channel franchises back to center stage. In a surprise announcement that has sent shockwaves through millennial fandoms, Disney Channel and Disney+ have officially greenlit a fourth installment in the musical girl-group saga. More than two decades after the original movie redefined tween pop culture, the franchise is ready to introduce its signature “growl power” to a whole new generation.
The biggest news of the revival is behind the microphone and the camera, as Raven-Symoné and Adrienne Bailon return for the next Cheetah Girls installment, titled The Cheetah Girls: Next Gen. Raven-Symoné will step back into the stylish shoes of Galleria “Bubbles” Garibaldi, while Adrienne Bailon-Houghton will reprise her beloved role as Chanel “Chuchie” Simmons.
The duo isn’t just bringing their vocal talents back to the screen; they are also taking on major creative leadership roles behind the scenes. Raven-Symoné is pulling double duty as an executive producer alongside Debra Martin Chase—the powerhouse producer behind the original trilogy—while Bailon-Houghton serves as a co-producer on the project.
The production is anchoring its nostalgic roots with an impressive lineup of returning legacy cast members. Sabrina Bryan will make a highly anticipated special appearance as Dorinda “Do” Thomas to support her former bandmates. Additionally, Lynn Whitfield and Lori Alter are locked in to return as the iconic and fashionable mothers, Dorothea and Juanita. Notably, original group member Kiely Williams is not attached to the project at this time.
While the legacy stars are anchoring the project, the narrative serves to pass the torch to a brand-new group of fiercely talented young stars. Leah Sava’ Jeffries stars as Faith, the talented daughter of Galleria, who is ready to find her own musical footprint. Joining her in the main pack is Carmen Sanchez, taking on the role of Chanel’s younger sister, Dior. Kaileen Chang and Sophie Lennon round out the primary teen lineup as Ruby and Brooklyn. Furthermore, Sophia Bush is joining the star-studded ensemble in a supporting role as a character named Jennifré.
According to the official Disney logline, the story picks up when Galleria and Chanel travel to Africa to volunteer at a wildlife sanctuary alongside Faith and her three closest friends. While immersing themselves in the local culture, the four teen girls find their voice, test the limits of their friendship, and ultimately save the preserve—taking the stage at the end to inherit the mantle as the true new Cheetah Girls.
To bring this massive international production to life, Disney has tapped director Bille Woodruff to helm the movie from a script penned by Kara Holden, Sarah Watson, and Deborah Swisher. The high-energy, music-driven film will feature modern, hard-hitting choreography by Kyle Hanagami. Production is officially slated to begin on location in South Africa later this month, capturing the exact vibrant backdrops where the onscreen story takes place. While an exact release date has not yet been set by Disney, the project is already tracking to be one of the streaming platform’s most anticipated family movie events.
