After 27 years, one of SpongeBob SquarePants’ most memorable background characters finally has a name. The real estate agent who famously lost her cool in the 1999 episode “Opposite Day” has been officially named Janet. Fans have been calling her the “real estate fish” for decades, but now she’s got a real identity.
Janet made her debut in “Opposite Day,” the Season 1 episode where Squidward tries to sell his house to escape SpongeBob and Patrick. The agent shows up to tour the property, only to find the two neighbors acting like Squidward and giving her the opposite of what she asks. After Squidward rushes in to explain, Gary the snail wanders in with a pickle on his face, and Janet finally snaps, storming out and refusing to sell the house.
Despite appearing in only a handful of episodes, Janet became a fan favorite. Her breakdown, “He’s Squidward, he’s Squidward, you’re Squidward… I’M SQUIDWARD!”, is one of the show’s most quotable moments. She later returned in Season 10’s “Unreal Estate” as a business owner, but fans never knew her name. The reveal came as a surprise to longtime viewers.
The name “Janet” adds a new layer to a character fans have loved for nearly three decades. She’s been edited into countless TikTok videos and memes, celebrated for her brief but iconic screen time. Now, SpongeBob fans finally have a name to put to the face, and it only took 27 years.
