Teyana Taylor made history at the 2026 BET Awards, taking home four major trophies including the prestigious Icon of the Year award. The multi-hyphenate star dominated the ceremony at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, capping off a year that saw her star rise across music, film, and fashion.

The night’s most emotional moment came when Janet Jackson made a surprise appearance to present Taylor with the Icon of the Year award. “It seems like only yesterday, our rose from Harlem grew out of the concrete and blossomed into our Icon of the Year,” Jackson said from the stage. “Watching you defy expectations, rewrite the rules and lead with an unstoppable work ethic”.

Taylor broke down in tears upon seeing her biggest inspiration. “They did not tell me Janet was coming,” she said through tears. “There would be no me without you”. She thanked Jackson for “every text, every hug, every talk,” declaring that her idol is her biggest inspiration.

Taylor’s dominance didn’t end with the Icon of the Year honor. She also swept the awards for Video Director of the Year for “Escape Room,” Best Actress, and the Fashion Vanguard Award . The wins came on the heels of a banner year that included a Golden Globe for her performance in One Battle After Another and an Oscar nomination.

Accepting the Icon of the Year award, Taylor reflected on her two-decade career with characteristic honesty. “Tonight they handed me a title and that title is Icon of the Year,” she said. “For a little minute, I wondered if I was supposed to be feel uncomfortable saying that title out loud. But nah, I worked my a–– off 20 years for this”.

Taylor made clear she would not shrink from the recognition. “I’m not accepting what I’ve earned with arrogance, I’m accepting what I’ve earned with gratitude,” she said. She also spoke about lifting others up, adding that “greatness isn’t measured by how many people stand beneath you; it’s measured by how many people stand beside you”.

“So tonight I will wear this title loud and proud because I promise to continue to earn it,” she declared.
