Jay-Z’s Roc Nation just secured a major win in the escalating legal war with attorney Tony Buzbee. A Texas judge dismissed all claims against the entertainment company in lawsuits brought by two former Buzbee clients, ruling the state lacks personal jurisdiction over Roc Nation.
The litigation stemmed from accusations that Roc Nation and lawyers working with Jay-Z’s camp improperly targeted Buzbee’s clients amid the fallout from the Sean “Diddy” Combs scandal. The ruling does not address the merits of the allegations, meaning the claims could potentially be refiled elsewhere.
The legal battle traces back to a now-withdrawn lawsuit Buzbee filed that included sexual assault allegations against Jay-Z. The rap mogul publicly denied the accusations, calling them a “blackmail attempt” and aggressively fighting back with multiple legal challenges against the attorney.
In December 2024, Buzbee filed a suit in Texas naming Roc Nation, Jay-Z’s law firm Quinn Emanuel, and attorney Marcy Croft as plaintiffs. He accused them of using “shadowy operatives” and financial incentives to convince his former clients into filing “frivolous” lawsuits against him.
Texas State Judge Kristen Hawkins ruled on June 16 that the plaintiffs, Gerardo Garcia, Jose Maldonado, and the Buzbee Law Firm, did not establish a basis for the Texas court to hear the cases. The decision is procedural rather than substantive, focusing entirely on jurisdiction.
One of Buzbee’s former clients, Garcia, alleged that two investigators showed up at his Houston residence offering money to join a class-action lawsuit against Buzbee’s firm. Roc Nation previously called the lawsuit “another sham”.
The ruling represents a tactical victory for Roc Nation but doesn’t end the broader legal conflict. Jay-Z’s separate federal lawsuit against Buzbee continues, with allegations including defamation and extortion. Buzbee has consistently denied wrongdoing and rejected the allegations as baseless.
